Chained For Life (1950)
Running Time: 80 mins Black & White
Starring: Daisy and Violet Hilton (actual Siamese twins), Allen Jenkin.
The conjoined twins Violet Hilton and Daisy Hilton, also seen in Tod Browning's classic Freaks and the smarmy Slash of the Knife, star in this interesting melodrama about love, betrayal, and murder. They play Vivian and Dotty Hamilton, joined-at-the-spine singers in a vaudeville show managed by the unscrupulous Ted Hinckley (Allen Jenkins). Hinckley pays a sharpshooter named Andre Pariseau 100 dollars a week to date Dotty as a publicity stunt. When the pair are married, Dotty's desire to be surgically separated from her sister leads the panicked Violet to shoot Pariseau dead, and she stands trial (with Dotty, naturally) for murder. Despite the exploitative ad campaign, this is a well-done melodrama presenting a realistic (?) situation in an engaging way. Viewers may still get the feeling that they might go to Hell for watching it, but at least it avoids the sleazy implications of Slash of the Knife. The British-born Hilton sisters were exploited in real life from a very early age, with their mother pimping them to various carnival freak shows around Britain and the U.S. Aside from their film and nightclub work, they were best known for an actual trial in which they were named as "the other women" in a divorce case. Their Pittsburgh hotel went belly-up in the 1950s and they ran a fruit-stand in Florida until they died in 1964 at the ages of 56. The first, and almost certainly last, movie to star Siamese twins, Violet and Daisy Hilton, vaudeville performers and co-stars of "Freaks", dance and sing in this turgid tearjerker of love and betrayal.

Mated (aka Mismated aka I Want A Baby) (1952)
Black & White

This uncommonly explicit sex education film begins where many other movies end, with a pair of lovers sharing a kiss upon getting married. Its narrator explains that in vintage Hollywood movies, couples joined in matrimony are alleged to "live happily ever after." However, such stories are little more than fairy tales. The reality of marriage is something else altogether. Everyday married life eventually becomes a plodding routine, stripped of all romance and passion. One of the reasons for this is "sexual incompatibility." Back when this film was produced, discussions about sex were taboo in the home and school. Young people were expected to remain sexually innocent until their wedding nights. They "knew nothing about the problems of physical adjustment that will confront them" as they became accustomed to married life. This film serves as a visual textbook which educates viewers on human sexuality. Every aspect of the subject is touched on, from male and female anatomy, sexual functions and development to the manner in which a persons sex life affects his or her overall health. The language is straightforward. There is plenty of male and female nudity, graphic and full-frontal. Finally and remarkably, several actual births are shown on camera. This frank, no-holds-barred film remains as provocative today as when it was first produced.

Witchcraft Through The Ages aka Haxen (1922)
Black & White

Documentary about the history of witchcraft, told in a variety of styles. Bizarre, visually arresting, even 80 years later.
In one scene we see witches concocting potions using the body parts of corpses from the gallows. One witch walks in carrying a bundle of sticks, and undoes the bundle revealing a decomposed human hand hidden inside.

Director Benjamin Christensen appears as a leering, tongue-wagging Satan, with very realistic makeup. The witches are shown with the Devil and his minions performing various acts of sacrilege and perversion that must have been extremely shocking at the time the movie originally appeared, and would be offensive to many people still. The film was banned for many years because of the depiction of these acts (not to mention the occasional nudity), as well as sacrileges performed by nuns and monks. There are some stop-motion animation sequences (pre-Harryhousen, no less) that are very good, especially for the time.

Running Time: 80 mins Black & White
Starring: Ida Lupino, Jan Sterling
With the exception of the vastly superior Caged, Columbia's Women's Prison was the quintessential "babes behind bars" drama of the 1950s. Ida Lupino (who else?) stars as Amelia VanZant, the sadistic supervisor of the titular prison. Unable to establish any sort of relationship with a man, Amelia takes it out on her long-suffering inmates. When prison psychiatrist Clark (Howard Duff) tries to improve conditions for the women, he too is targetted for destruction by the vituperous Ms. VanZant. The cast includes such perennial "hard-boiled dames" as Jan Sterling, Cleo Moore, Audrey Totter, Phyllis Thaxter, Gertrude Michael and Mae Clarke. Not taken very seriously in the first place, Women's Prison was elevated to the level of "high camp" by youthful film buffs of the 1960s and 1970s.
