Three friends — George (Laurence Harvey), Harris (Jimmy Edwards) and J (David Tomlinson) — decide to escape from their women problems by going boating on the Thames River. With Oxford, England, as their destination, they set out for the trip of a lifetime. This is the most panned of the three biographies of songsmith Stephen Foster. Though made on a tiny budget and suffering from limp direction, it does feature 21 of Foster’s best-loved songs. The story portrays Foster as a mild, rather dense bookkeeper with a talent for songwriting. He is in love with a certain woman, but she coldly rejects him. Poor Foster becomes depressed and terribly uninspired. Fortunately, her sister is there to scoop him up and become his new muse.
