A man has died leaving a fortune somewhere on his ranch. Brandon and his cohorts think a map is hidden in a picture frame. But when they bid on the picture at the auction, newcomer Jerry Lane outbids them. He also buys the ranch so they place their housekeeper there to get the picture. And then to keep Jerry out of the way, they frame him for murder.

A famous bandleader, suffering from overwork and exhaustion, goes to a sanitarium for a rest. While there he dreams of being out west at a dude ranch, where he finds himself involved in the beautiful owner’s struggle to keep her ranch from falling into the hands of the villain, who wants either her or her ranch (or, preferably, both).

Kate Hilton, returning to her ranch in Springfield via stagecoach after learning of the murder of her father, meets U.S. Marshal Nevada Jack McKenzie. The stage is held up and robbed of the rancher’s money, but Nevada manages to bring it in after the driver has been killed. Sandy Hopkins, also a U.S. Marshal, is posing as a cook at the only cafĂ© in town. Joel Edwards now running the Wells Fargo office after Hilton was killed, and Kate are in love. J. D. Edwards, president of the land-and-cattle company, and step-father to Joel, controls all the interest in Springfield. A number of citizens have been killed for no apparent reason, and Doctor Applegate has sent for Nevada and Sandy to solve the mystery killings. In the first of the Range Buster series, a mysterious phantom is murdering the hands at the Circle T Ranch and the owner sends for the Range Busters just before he too is killed. They quickly run into trouble with Torrance and his gang. Torance is after the Circle T but Crash doesn’t think he is the phantom. Instead he suspects it may be blind Uncle Rolf. When the phantom strikes next, Crash is ready and his identity is soon revealed.
