Hilarious Posters (1905)
Black & White

This short feature is based on some amusing ideas, which unfortunately do not entirely come off due to imperfect execution. The movie starts with a wall full of posters for various entertainers, which become the source of a series of antics involving passers-by. The story that follows is clever, but the visual effects in this one are far below the standard you come to expect from M?li?s. Instead of the usual smooth dissolves and careful background continuity, the special effects here unfortunately come across as rather clumsy and amateurish. It helps somewhat that the story really is a funny one, with some clever ideas, and is worth watching. It's just really too bad that the technical side of it was not up to the visual wizard's usual standard, because it could have been a fine feature if the special effects had worked better.

Hilarious posters (1906)

Then, two flics walk by, and the characters become inanimate. After the cops walk on, life returns. The poster people attack a swell beneath the wall, and he runs for the cops. They return, and the wall falls on them, revealing a gate behind which the poster folks laugh. Chaos ensues.

Infernal Cakewalk (1903)
Black & White

M?li?s used a very popular dance at the time and used it as the basis for a film. How would the cake-walk be danced if they knew it in Hell? M?li?s himself appears as the demon who jumps out of the cake in the second part of the film and that's where the man goes experimental again. M?li?s manages to shoot himself in two parts: a dancing torso, dancing legs and a void in between. By today's standards the trickery isn't too convincing, but you'd have to be of bad will to say it's poorly done. Then you have to think of this short movie being made nearly a century ago and it's then you fully realise M?li?s was more than a pioneer, he was a genius. A genius who sometimes told a story and sometimes just went for lavish eye-candy.
