Ford authorized a massive, star-studded network television spectacular to give their new Edsel maximum exposure. Bing Crosby was hired to host a LIVE jazz music extravaganza on CBS Television shortly after the Edsel’s introduction. Crosby convinced pals Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, and Louis Armstrong to join him, with a “surprise” visit by Bob Hope. These well known and loved entertainers were at the peak of their careers at the time, and their presence virtually assured a massive audience. Indeed, “The Edsel Show” telecast was one of the highest rated and well regarded programs of the year.

A filmed broadcast of the Command Performance radio programs in which various Hollywood stars appeared and performed in accordance with letter requests from American service men stationed around the world. Transcriptions were made of each program and sent to American posts and camps around the world. This entry (Army-Navy Screen Magazine No. 20) was broadcast and filmed at a live performace at Camp Roberts, California. Lana Turner, via a request from a group of soldiers, fried a steak, which was brought on stage accompanied by armed guards since this was a rationed and rare item during the war years. Betty Hutton sung “Murder, He Says” and Judy Garland did “Over the Rainbow”, and all three guest stars swapped quips and banter with emcee Bob Hope, with Hope usually on the butt-end of the jokes.

This video presents archival footage of the Academy Awards ceremony held in 1955 for movies released in 1954. The program shows an evening hosted by Bob Hope, during which the Elia Kazan anti-union picture On the Waterfront took top honors with eight wins out of twelve nominations, including the prize of Best Picture, while its star, Marlon Brando, won his first Best Actor Oscar after four consecutive nominations. Kazan garnered the Oscar for Best Director as well, while Grace Kelly received the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in The Country Girl. This video also features nominees such as Humphrey Bogart (for The Caine Mutiny) and Bing Crosby (for The Country Girl).

America: A Look Back – Not So Long Ago offers a look at some socially and historically important events that occurred in the United Sates in the brief period of time between the end of the second world war and the beginning of the Korean conflict. Narrated by the legendary Bob Hope, stories touched on include Truman’s presidential victory and the McCarthy hearings.

Hosted by Bob Hope, this star-studded war fund-raiser features Betty Grable singing “Marching to a Love Song”, Frank Sinatra with “Saturday Night is the Lonliest Night of the Week”, and “Buy a Bond” by Bing Crosby. Freshly deceased, he is flown to the United States where Dr. Trenton transplants his brain into the body of a simpleton in a classic “assistant got the wrong kind of body” plot line. Dr. Trenton has a few nefarious plot twists of his own in mind, and then there’s the thing with the dwarf and the women chained in the basement. It’s up to Amir’s friend Bob and wife Tracey to try and salvage this tale.

Gloria Dawn lives down the hall from her sweetheart, Bobbie Knight. The dishonest Henry Black is Gloria’s guardian, and he is also in charge of Bobbie’s inheritance. The scheming guardian and his sister have been spending Bobbie’s money, and they hope to have the sister marry Bobbie so that they can keep control over his money.
